A calm first session is more useful than a long flight. Start with the instructions supplied with your exact drone and take time to learn on the ground.
1. Read before you power on
Identify the controls for your model, including takeoff, landing and stopping the motors. Follow the manual for assembly, pairing and calibration. Do not copy a button sequence from a different drone.
2. Choose a suitable place
Check that flying is allowed at your location and that you meet the applicable operator and pilot requirements. Choose a clear space away from people, animals, roads, water and obstacles. Keep the drone in direct sight. An empty-looking field or a private garden is not automatically a permitted flight location.
3. Check the drone and battery
With the power off, inspect the body, propellers and battery for damage. Fit the battery and any supplied guards as instructed. Use only compatible charging equipment and let a warm battery cool before charging. Do not fly with loose or damaged parts.
4. Prepare your first landing
Choose a clear, level takeoff and landing area. Check the weather against the limits in your manual. Avoid wind and rain for your first practice. Keep spectators well back and agree who is controlling the drone.
5. Keep the first session simple
Follow your manual to take off, practise a short, controlled hover and land. Use small control movements. Stay close enough to judge the drone's position clearly; do not test maximum height, distance or speed.
6. Stop before you feel rushed
Land when the battery warning appears, conditions change or control feels uncertain. Follow the manual's shutdown procedure and wait for the propellers to stop before approaching. Never try to catch a flying drone.
Flying together
For family sessions, a responsible adult should check the rules and supervise. Product age labels and legal pilot-age requirements are different; adult supervision does not automatically remove either restriction.
